Bookstore Titles Highlight the Ethnic Diversity of the American West
The consignment bookstore WritersWest.com stocks titles that only reflect the history and lifestyle of the American West. With more authors choosing to place their books at the site, the titles concerning the ethnic diversity of the West has increased.

HELENA, MT, February 09, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The recent autographed additions from John W. Ravage (professor emeritus at University of Wyoming) highlight this, with BLACK PIONEERS, 2nd edition, recently released from University of Utah press. It features nearly 200 photographs with abundant information that documents the contribution of African Americans to the westward expansion. Ravage's novel SINGLETRTEE reveals some of the incredible odds blacks encountered. It is based on a true occurrence in 1868 Wyoming. This book is a classic, and in Europe the rare hardback edition sells for $100 and more. Writers West carries the soft cover edition for much less.

Other autographed titles about blacks in the West include Mike Kearby's historically accurate (yet action packed) novels set in West Texas after the Civil War (THE ROAD TO A HANGING and RIDE THE DESPERATE TRAIL). Kae Cheatham's THE ADVENTURES OF ELIZABETH FORTUNE, and FURY IN SUMNER COUNTY describes the West in that time period. Nonfiction books, such as FREEDOM ON THE BORDER: THE SEMINOLE MAROONS IN FLORIDA, THE INDIAN TERRITORY, COAHUILA, AND TEXAS, by Kevin Mulroy and THE BLACK WEST, by William Loren Katz are also available.

Cheatham and Kearby also have autographed titles that reflect the American Indian experience. Kearby's newest title THE LAST RENEGADE deals with Comanche captivity—in a circus. As with Ravage's books, Kearby's is based on fact and well-researched history.

Historian Willard Thompson writes about the Chumash people enduring the relentless push for them to assimilate; DREAM HELPER: A NOVEL OF EARLY CALIFORNIA is set in the California missions (circa 1790s). Thompson was awarded the Sara Miller McCune Award to write this book.

Cheatham has a young-reader book SPOTTED FLOWER AND THE PONOKOMITA that takes place on the Northern Plains before European contact. Her book BLOOD AND BOND is a contemporary story where the protagonist searches for his spiritual identity. Nancy M. Peterson's WALKING IN TWO WORLDS: MIXED-BLOOD INDIAN WOMEN SEEKING THEIR PATH has twelve biographies of Native American women who have overcome racial and economic obstacles to make their place. Plenty of other nonfiction titles, too, like WE TALK YOU LISTEN by the late Vine Deloria, Jr. (it's autographed!)

These and many other titles at WritersWest.com reflect the vast diversity of the American West.
